effin brilliant September 20, 2000 Peter Prisekin (Merrifield, VA USA) Someone who knows me told me to go out and by this CD. I got it last night, and goddamn! is it brilliant. I'm not normally a lyrics person, except when they reach out and grab me, but Voltaire is a poet of the highest order. The closest I can come to think of is Momus or XTC, but I have a feeling the lyrics would work even as written word, so I'm going to go out and start reading his comics as well. And the music aint no slouch, either, even if it is of the goth/folksy/campfire variety, it's still well produced, supportive of the singing, and first rate. And the singing -- this guy has one of the greatest voices that I've heard in a long time. It reminds me of Steve Kilbey of the Church. Go out and get this CD. If you have any sense of humor, you won't be sorry. This guy should be huge.
Voltaire and the gang do it again October 4, 2000 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first caught Voltaire at Philly's Dracula's Ball; I thought, "Damn, he's catchy." I loved "The Devil's Bris," so when I was invited to New York to catch him in an acoustic show at the Raven Cafe before the release of "Almost Human," I had to go. He and Gregor put on a great show. Then came the CD release party at the Batcave; despite having my wallet stolen on the subway on the way there, I managed to have a fabulous time and get my very own copy of "Almost Human" (thanks to my husband, whose wallet was well-guarded). "Almost Human" is a lot more pop-flavored than "Bris," with Gregor's violin taking the place of electric guitar solos. Voltaire is in fine voice and wit, ranging from tender ("Anniversary Song") to twisted ("Dead Girls"). At his Batcave show, he even poked fun of his picture on the cover. If you can catch him live, you definitely should. In the meantime, buy "Almost Human," you won't regret it.
Almost Human October 27, 2000 Erica Anderson (Minneapolis, MN) The cover of this album caught my eye at the local record store and on a whim I bought it. The melodies are simply gorgeous and the lyrics absolutely a riot. I haven't heard anyone use sarcasm as well as Voltaire has on this album in a long time. God Thinks is the perfect example of Voltaire's dry wit. Feathery Wings has to be my all time favorite track on the cd, although I do love each and one of the songs. It is a gorgeous ballad. Voltaire is one of the few male singers that I listen to that makes me weak in the knees.
Dead Girls will love Voltaire! July 8, 2001 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Whether you are new to Goth, or have been in the scene for years, this CD will leave you with a big stupid grin on your pale face! The ironic lyrics, and infectious music will be stuck in your head for days! One of my particular favourites is "God Thinks". It's about time, someone had the guts (and the sense), to put the man in his place. It's a statement, not everyone will agree with, but should be heard, all the same. The music is so classic and the mood Voltaire creates is both, creepy and beautiful- at the same time!...
Inspiration...for lack of a better word November 23, 2001 When I first heard the music on Almost Human, I was absolutely amazed. Voltaire has a fantastic voice and apparently a poetic mind, which is a rare combination. ...However, when most of my friends heard it, they hated it...but then, they won't really listen to anything that's not as loud as Manson's Little Horn. It's their loss though, because they're missing out on a masterpiece. Keep it up, Voltaire. You're amazing.
