Lava Lamp Folk July 2, 1998 Craig Riecke (East Syracuse, NY USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
You know that game where you have a ring of people and you whisper a message around the circle, and by the time it ends the message is nothing like what it started? This box set reminds me of that. If you pass down a folk song like Henry Lee or Booweavil Blues enough, it becomes so idiosyncratic and warped that it achieves brilliance ... behold, 6 CD's worth. And even the songs that sound terrible (how 'bout the howlingly offkey "One Morning in May"?) stick in the brain. Whatever conceptions you have about folk are blown to hell here. A memorable experience!

Yes, it's that good. Forget about folkie-revival, 60s idealism, "the quiet dignity of poverty," left or right wings, the freedom of laissez faire capitalism, or the dictatorship of the proletariat. This IS the real thing: lots of dead people singing their hearts out 'cause they had nothing to lose. Greil Marcus calls this the soundtrack of the "Old, Weird America," and it is: an America that deep at heart is wild, and mysterious and unrecognizable.
The quintissential collection of folk music ever released. June 25, 1998 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My father gave me a beaten and dusty copy of these recordings on vinyl many years ago, and gave me a 1/2 hour lecture about who these faceless pioneers were. He told me of the significance and historical value, but I was too young to understand, and dismissed him as an old fool. When I finally grew up and decided I should have really listened, I was mesmerised by what I heard. This is the roots of all we have come to know in every genre of modern music. This is the true ground zero to the modern age of music and is a must have for musicians and true music fans alike. Compilations such as this never come along twice.

This set should come with a warning label. Caution: Repeated listenings will alter your musical universe forever.
Astounding.... January 31, 2001 Timothy R. Blake (UK) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've just purchased this set, and I'm still listening to it now as I write this, but I'm knocked out. I thought at one stage I was listening to the Band, there's so many wonderful tracks here. The packaging is superb, the content will blow you away. Listen to this, then the Broadside set, and revel in some of the most powerful music ever committed to the public ear.
