This is one fantastic anthology. It is wonderfully annotated, and they give you a reproduction of the original liner notes. From what I saw on the Smithsonian's website, though, they are no longer producing this box set so if you want it you'd better act fast.
Will Change Your Life July 4, 1999 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This set of records, which I received for Christmas a year and a half ago, changed my life. No, I havent't learned the banjo, nor do I play now in a jug band. But now I know about these things, and my taste in music has undergone serious changes. Buy this box set, and let it open your eyes, too!
Ghosts aplenty inside these tunes September 26, 2007 K. Swanson (Austin, TX United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are some truly haunting performances here, and some funny ones, and some of everything, really. This stuff is so far deeper and weirder and spookier than any folk I've ever heard. It's the motherlode; Harry Smith wandered around and got these recordings before radio started, and thus we get true folk music, passed down the generations and from that area, or from the motherland of the musicians, with the spirit of the New World. The vibes are palpable, varied, and intense. Lots of "mistakes", but so much feeling that missed notes only add to the experience. If you've ever liked any folk music at all, whether Leadbelly, the Seegers, the Carter family, early Dylan, or if you need to know where real country music comes from, this is your collection. Too many highlights to list. Beautiful and detailed booklet with notes on each tune makes it even better...though listening first with no preconceptions and creating your own story for the songs is probably an even better way to let this stuff seep into your subconscious. Best of all, it's probably at your local library.
By far the most influential set of recordings ever assembled August 24, 1998 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wonderful. It's impossible to measure the musical and historical impact this wonderful set of recording's has caused. This is the first time in nearly 35 years that it has been available for purchase after falling out of copywrite. Worth every penny!!
incredible album October 1, 2000 E. Jars (Tucson, AZ USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was introduced to some of these songs during a folklore class at the University of Arizona. This anthology of songs speaks to the heart. They are authentic folk music, part of the history of the United States. Initially, the selections almost corny, with their twang and sometimes not quite hitting the right tone. But a closer listening reveal the power of these songs. If you like early blues, your love this album. The written material included with the anthology provide additional insight into the songs. If you can t afford to buy it, try the library.
