5 out of 5 stars wonderful   October 2, 2008

many of the songs from this concert are same as from the last dvd, 'remember that night'.the question then becomes - so what? As most can guess, each performance of music is always different - each time it is reinterpreted, caressed and massaged into perfection, yet unique. This is the case with Live in Gdansk, and my reaction was one of sheer aural bliss.
I thought the ending of 'take a breath' was transcendent, with Gilmours' and his friends' playing with the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orch. was literally stunning. Gilmour's voice is dark chocolate silk on my favorite 'pocketful of stones'. Richard Wright, his last appearance unfortunately, god bless this angel and may he rest in eternal joy, received a roar from the crowd who then broke into a chant of 'richard..richard..' . If you can stay dry eyed after that you are a stronger person then I am.
'Astronomie Domine' and 'echoes' are simply astounding, aurally perfect.
Gilmour once again soars into comfortably numb, which has been voted the best guitar solo ever performed. These cd's and DvD's are simply something no floyd fan could possibly afford to miss.
the number of songs in this dvd + cd, with the dvd performances of the other included excerpts from concerts and the barn jams, the documentaries, make this set worth every penny it cost.
I don't know how many more concerts can be expected from Gilmour, many of us are getting a bit older, but 'pulse', 'remember' and this concert from Poland are simply gifts that i have been privileged to have experienced. thank you David.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoying it, but the booklet...   September 24, 2008

I was surprised to receive this in the mail today! Haven't watched the DVDs yet. I'm currently half-way through the second CD. There's a beautiful and touching version of Shine On You Crazy Diamond (maybe the first time the song was performed after Syd's death). Very excited to hear a live version of Echoes, my favorite song...

But I think they messed up the booklet that came with the 2CD/2DVD set. I open it up and see the listings for disc 1. Then I turn the page and see disc one again, upside down. Turn the page again and disc 3 is listed. Then I turn the page and again see disc 3, again upside down.

Not that it's a real big deal, but I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great   September 25, 2008

oh boy, I will be in trouble for daring to suggest this is only worth 3.5 stars....
CD wise this is a blend of classic Floyd stuff (with a slightly mellow undertone) and a live version of On An Island. Your enjoyment may be based on how much you like Island, I found the original a bit bland and found the live version the same, interesting but not up to the Floyd standards. The more mellow approach to the Floyd stuff is interesting and gives a different slant to the variations we all already have and already I am re-playing the Floyd aspects of this concert and skipping over the Island stuff (sorry Dave).
The DVD stuff is of obvious interest but could have been so much better with better sound and editing, but is still worthwhile and is what raises this to a 3.5 rating from a 3.
And in the background we hear the late, and great, Rick Wright in his last performance, worth buying for this alone.

5 out of 5 stars GILMOUR AT HIS ABSOLUTE BEST!!   September 30, 2008

David Gilmour not only still retains the amazing skill he has always had, he has even grown his talents, as can be witnessed here.

Even if you already own "Remember That Night" (as I do), DO NOT HESITATE purchasing this LIVE IN GDANSK set. Yes, it REALLY is worth having this set.

Here is why:

**** AMAZING PRODUCTION QUALITY, ON BOTH THE CDs AND THE DVDs

**** THE FINAL OFFICIAL RELEASE WHERE YOU ALSO GET TO SEE / HEAR PINK FLOYD KEYBOARDIST RICHARD WRIGHT

**** COMPLETE AND AMAZING 5.1 VERSION OF "ON AN ISLAND" ALBUM

**** GILMOUR, STILL AT THE VERY TOP OF HIS GAME, DEMONSTRATING NEW TALENTS, SUCH AS PLAYING THE SAXOPHONE!!

The only reason that I would hold off on buying this is if you hope that someday it will come out on BluRay (Which has not been announced to date).

Nonetheless, these standard DVDs look AMAZING on my 65" Mitsubishi HDTV.

This set, to me, really helps to bring closure to my favorite band of all time, PINK FLOYD.

P.S., somewhere out there is a nice DVD recording of a Roger Waters concert from Cork, Ireland (2006), which features Nick Mason. If you see both of these concerts, you will be a very satisfied Pink Floyd fan. :o)

One Love. Rick Wright R.I.P.

3 out of 5 stars Half & Half   November 18, 2008

I'd love to say that this CD/DVD is great, but I can only really go halfway. That's because roughly half of the material on it is from David's latest studio release "On An Island", which, to me, is the musical equivalent of a good sleeping pill. The Pink Floyd material, such as "Astronomy Domine", "Fat Old Sun", "Echoes", and "A Great Day For Freedom", are wonderful, however, the selections from "On An Island", are incredibly BORING. It's as simple as that.
