Love & Life November 1, 2008 Geminigirl (Philadelphia, PA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Eric Benet's latest offering is a mixed collection of songs that offer a little something for all listeners. Unlike HURRICANE, which was more reflective & a little melancholy, LOVE & LIFE features love ballads, mid-tempo smooth grooves and uptempo tracks. The constant is always his beautiful voice though and although this collection as a whole is not as strong as my favorite album, A DAY IN THE LIFE but if you're a fan, there are a few songs that you'll probably press the repeat button on. I think that Eric is an artist who has found his musical "lane" and is content to stay there. He's not some 20 year old guy who needs hip hop beats or duets with rappers to be relevant to his hard core fan base. He's not an entertainer like Ne-Yo or Usher, he is a straight up singer so people who consider buying any of his albums should accept that fact and recognize that his strengths lie in his beautiful vocal ability and positive lyrics. Of the 12 tracks, I enjoy 9 and have 6 on repeat: YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE - excellent reworking of a sample, love the falsetto note he hit EVERLOVE w/ Terry Dexter - beautiful duet (hope to hear more solo stuff from Terry) CHOCOLATE LEGS - love the spare musical arrangement & his delivery of the song WEEKEND GIRL - uptempo track with a great musical arrangement, especially the sax solo STILL I BELIEVE - interesting arrangement DON'T LET GO - I love the lyrics & sentiment behind the song and the fact that it's another uptempo track on which Eric doesn't go overboard trying to sound "current" Overall I'm happy just to have some new sounds from one of my favorite male r&b singers and since I liked more than I disliked, I consider it a successful purchase; however I can also understand the frustration voiced by other reviewers regarding the fact that Eric really doesn't do anything groundbreaking on this collection.
Still Making Sweet Sexy Music September 9, 2008 Avid Reader (Atlanta, GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's good to know that Eric Benet has not swayed from his roots and continues to put out quality music. Now, this is what I call singing!!!! And he had total creative control over his project. Sit back and take a listen.......Do your thang Eric!!!
A Desert Island R&B Disc : Benet Outdoes Himself September 15, 2008 Kabir Davis 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Its ironic that in an R&B field littered with geniuses such as Robin Thicke, Maxwell and D'Angelo, the true master of them all has often been totally overlooked. I'm referring to Eric Benet, unsung hero of the Neo-Soul Movement, who certainly deserves far more attention that what the mainstream has afforded him so far. Since 1996, the man has released one quality album after another (do try to find his unreleased "Better and Better" album - its online somewhere or the other, and is a certifiable classic). My personal favorite is his spectacular soul record "Hurricane", but if you want some smooth grooves and memorable tunes, then this 2008 release is the one to go for. The gospel-tinged opening of "Love, Patience and Time" sets the tone for the entire CD - and by the time you are on Track 4 ("Don't Let Go"), its evident that this is an album where no two tracks sound the same (an accomplishment in the genre, if you follow R&B music in general), but to be fair, there are a few 'babymaking' songs that sound like odd missteps. Prime amongst these are "Chocolate Legs", and the very 1980s sounding "Everlove" (which is a great song, only it sounds like some old Peabo Bryson track). "Love and Life" may not be Benet's best album. In fact, his attention to bringing the 1980s sound into the entire album is a little distracting (not to mention it ages the CD, and not always in a good way). But as a solid piece of work, its got a lot going for it. I still choose "Hurricane" as his best work ever - that CD has a *special* something that has not diminished all these years later, but this album runs a close second. Recommended.
Average CD September 23, 2008 Murphy E. Smith 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was disappointed by this cd because I thought it would be better. The songs are not bad they are just average.
Fantastic! September 28, 2008 rnbmusiclover 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Eric does not disappoint on his new release. People say that R&B music is dead, forgetful and just plain boring. Well Eric does his part of bringing it back! He was inspired by the true R&B music of the 70's and 80's and it shows. The whole cd is enjoyable from start to finish. There are no fillers on this record!! So much so, it is really hard to pick a few favorite tracks. If I start, I'll end up naming the whole cd! What's also great is there are some sexy ballads, great midtempo tunes and some serious "jump up and dance" tracks. I guarantee that you will love it too!
