The Worm Get his Wings! August 26, 2002 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
"Antichrist Superstar" not only put Marilyn Manson into the center of controversy, but it's also indeed the lightning bolt that struck the rock industry. Acting as both the beginning and end of a 3-part autobiographical tragedy that continued years later with Mechanical Animals and Holywood, ACS allows Manson to decry the traumas he suffered in his childhood, most notably the years he was forced to spend nearly brainwashed by Heritage Christian School. "The Beautiful People," was about how the little boy inside him, Brian Warner, was repeatedly harassed and assauted by his classmates, humiliated by the teachers and treated like a nobody. "Kinderfeld," which by the way used to be titled "Smells like Children," told how Brian's late Grandfather Jack Warner used to hide an enormous collection of pornography in his basement. In these 2 songs alone, one can understand how Manson's sexual desires AND his values of right and wrong were warped so extremely that his realization of it was almost hysterical. Throughout the record, Manson compared himself to a worm (a caterpiller rather) wrapping himself up inside a chrisalys and painfully spreading its wings. At the same time, however, the lyrics of some of his songs were heavily inspired by the Book of Revelations, which told how the Antichrist rose to world domination, tricked his followers into believing that he was God, and in the end used that power to destroy every living thing around him...everything in the very same society he hated and despised. The title track "Antichrist Superstar" is accompanied by a brutal chanting that to some resembles that of the Nazis or Fascists. The following track "1996" is where Manson (in his iron rule) declares war upon all who attempted to beat him down. I could go on and on about ACS, but the point is, it's a rock opera that music buyers must not ignore.
Set A Standard Never Topped By Manson or his Copycats June 22, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR (ACSS) indeed is heavy, offensive, and accessible enough to top any of his other albums. The concept is the Wormboy, who is vulnerable and abused, being the cold and emotionless antichrist to take over America's youth and bring them with him during his downfall. It sounds like Bowie's Ziggy Stardust or Pink Floyd's The Wall, but with Trent Reznor's industrial and technical work making it brutally heavy. The lyrics do a great job insulting Christianity and middle America in general. The only problem with the production was the chaotic personnel problems. Founding guitarist Daisy Berkowitz left after only writing and recording on a handful of songs, Trent Reznor cowrote 3 songs, played guitar on a few, and brought NIN member Danny Lohner to play guitar, then Manson's bassist Twiggy Ramirez filled in for Daisy's absense by doing both bass and lead/rythem guitar slots. Let's not forget Zim Zum, Daisy's hired replacement who may or may not have played guitar on Irresponsible Hate Anthem. If you're into heavy metal or industrial and like a hard rock sensibility, this band is for you and ACSS is their finest album. It's by no means an easy listen, you should follow the concept to hear the story. Now for the songs... IRRESPONSIBLE HATE ANTHEM-Perfect opener, my personal favorite. It's a fast and furious blistering piece of rock and roll with hateful lyrics, to me it sounds like terrorists blowing up a church. This song is set in 1997 when the antichrist is at the top. BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE-The big single from the album doesn't disappoint. The riffs are so heavy and catchy they'll be in your head forever. It's about people with money and beauty having it better at life, which is unfair. DRIED UP, TIED UP, AND DEAD TO THE WORLD-The tour was named after this song. It has alot of fancy industrial beats and keyboards and especially the ending really rocks. Lyrics about being used for everything by manipulative others. TOURNIQUET-Another single and a concert favorite to this day. One of the most emotional songs with moaning guitars and sad lyrics about one of Manson's disturbing nightmares about making a girl out of his dead body parts. LITTLE HORN-This song is another fast paced heavy metal rocker with all screaming vocals, perfect for moshing and headbanging. Lyrics about the antichrist rising to popularity. CRYPTOCHILD-It's kind of filler but it's still an interesting listen with great keyboard work and a computer voice singing. DEFORMOGRAPHY-This is an essential song about abusive relationships ending in murderous disaster. The verses are the best part because the lyrics are so sick and perverted. WORMBOY-Daisy did this song and he was a really creative guitarist. The lyrics here are great but it's really an excuse for Daisy to play all the weird guitar parts he wants. MR. SUPERSTAR-Another essential song about lusting fans going after the antichrist superstar and what they will do to be with him. The lyrics and chorus are great, and the guitar riffs in the chorus are very heavy like the upcoming Reflecting God. Fun listening song. ANGEL WITH THE SCABBED WINGS-Another mid tempo hard rocker about the abuse the antichrist allows himself. This song has the best chorus on the album. KINDERFIELD-The fans are correct, this is the creepiest song ever recorded. If you read his autobiography you'll find it's about his grandfather, a twisted porno creep. ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR-The title track is the perfect arena rocker, with the "hey!" chants and the awesome driving guitar riff. He's saying the people who love him and the people who hate him are both helping him get what he wants. The voice at the end is scary, it says "when you are suffering, know that I have betrayed you." 1996-The is even faster and heavier than Little Horn, the lyrics are anti-everything and everyone! If you're angry, you will love this song. Cool drums and guitars too. MINUTE OF DECAY-Slow, stripped down, and sad. The antichrist wants to take his fans with him when he dies. He can't live the lie of life anymore because he's already dead. Manson wrote all the music for once on this song so it's worth a listen for the guitar work and bass lines he wrote. REFLECTING GOD-Crying time is over, time for headbanging riffs, roaring screams, a great opening bass line, and the deepest anti Christian lyrics he's ever written. His idea of being God is scary yet excitingly violent. MAN THAT YOU FEAR-The saddest song on the album, and probably of his career. If Manson songs could cause suicide, this would be Jonestown. The lyrics make life so trivial you question your own existence. All in all, someone was going to make an album like this for the 90s, and Manson did it perfectly well. "Here's your antichrist superstar!!!!"
Here comes the Antichrist Superstar, and there go the reviews... March 16, 2007 Caroline Shrimp 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This album in my opinion is one of the best albums to emerge out of the 1990's in the rock genre. All of the lyrics are precise and every song is heavy-hitting musically. This is truly Manson's masterpiece album. This is also the first album he made that he was really proud of. He worked over 7 months to record this album with the help of Reznor's producing, most of which wasn't serious work at all (Read his autobiography The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell as I have to see what I mean by that). This is single-handedly Manson's coming out record - which also brought him one of his most commercially successful hits "The Beautiful People." This is his vision of how the world made him how he is today (as of 1996, when he was working on it) and the world in general. It is record is broken into 3 Cycles, Cycle I. The Heirophant, Cycle II. The Inauguration Of The Worm, and Cycle III. Disintegrator Rising. The main concept of the album is of the Distingrator's rise to power and the destruction of the world and himself that insues because of his power that has risen. Over all it makes for a great album as no songs are fillers in the long run, so I'll break it down song by song: Cycle I. The Heirophant "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" - Easily one of the best on the record in my view, this is everything a Manson song could and should be. Fantastic lyrical content and heavy hitting riffs add to the pumping live crowd cheer at the start of the song. *On a side note* The booklet to this album states that this song was recorded on February 14th, 1997 - which is completely wrong as the album was released in October of 1996. "The Beautiful People" - Easily another one of the album's best songs, but often is strongly popular among non Marilyn Manson fans. This was the album's first single and what broke the band into mainstream success, it's no doubt with the captivating vocals and instantly noticeable opening riffs. "Dried Up, Tied, and Dead To The World" - This song has all the overbearing emotion in lyrics that Manson always seems to write. The song overall is excellent and keeps the darkness in the overall main concept. "Tourniquet" - This song was also a single. It's popular but not enough as it should be. It's more the lyrics rather that the music in this one. But all in all it is a very good and stand out song from the album. Cycle II. Inauguration Of The Worm "Little Horn" For some reason I like this song. It has all it needs to be a great Manson song. *Must be listened to by the lyrics alone* "Cryptorchid" - Gacy's work on this song is phenomenal and the lyrics lead up to what awaits at the end of the album, overall very good song and different from any others on the album. "Deformography" - This is one of the many overlooked songs on the album in my opinion but really shouldn't be. Marilyn's vocals are what pulls this song out. In my view one of the best found here. "Wormboy" - The lyrics are well-written and overall is another good song on the album, not much more to say on it though. "Mister Superstar" - Not very known or popular but should be by it's steady climb from somber sounding to heavy churning riffs. One of the best songs on the album and often recaptures the interest in the album if you get bored between Tourniquet and Wormboy. "Angel With The Scabbed Wings" - This turns out to be the MOST underrated song on the album in my opinion. It has all the aggression and musical talent it needs to be for a good Manson song but that's not usually the case with most. Just the lyrics alone stand out to me and the music, oh god the music suits it so well. Cycle III. Disintegrator Rising "Kinderfeld" - This is also often overshadowed by the album's standout tracks but really is good if you give it a listen. Talent wise, nothing is wasted here. But you may think different, it all just belongs to the ear of the listener. "Antichrist Superstar" - The title track and peak of the album in intensity. Manson certainly gets his point across with this song if you have failed to heed it in the previous tracks. Nothing is spared here whether it is lyrically, vocally and or your ears. "1996" - Yes I will keep up with all previous reviews and agree that this is very much Irresponsible Hate Anthem Pt. II. It has the same feel of rawness and sheer hate as I.H.A. has but this is more or less the main point to what this album is about, very much like Antichrist Superstar. Overall - good song! "The Minute Of Decay" - Very emotional if you read the lyrics, but the sounding of everything makes it not seem to be. That only means the boys did their job at masking that feeling in this song. very likeable and listenable to your ears. "The Reflecting God" - Accoriding to his autobiography, this whole song revolves around previous Dreams and/or Nightmares that Manson had previous years before that reoccur. This is often seen as the pinnacle of Antichrist Superstar - it hits hard and heavy by both lyrical depth and thrashing guitars. Turn up the stereo on this one! "The Man That You Fear" - That's right the album closer. Couldn't have been a better ending either. This song is so disturbing in lyrical content in my view that it indeed does make you truly think more about Manson as a man, a boy and more. One of the best on the album as far as I'm concerned. *A hidden track is after this song entitled "Empty Sounds Of Hate" - overall nothing too much exciting but worth a listen every once in a while. * So this pretty much ends my review of this landmark album. This truly is Marilyn's brainchild and is still hugely popular today, hell I still listen to it. It was released at the right time, a time when an unsuspecting America would hear it as loud and pervasive as it is.
Man that we fear. Give credit when due. October 27, 1999 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
As the die hard Mansonite I had to have this CD. I think that he acurately portays an appropriate mockery of modern society and religion through the characters and theme of this CD. The CD starts out with "I am so all american, I'd sell you suicide". Moving to say the absolute least. This song ridicules modern society better than even I could have and ask my friends that's pretty dang hard. The The beautiful People with its hypnotic riffs and meaningful content.Explaining the blindness and uselessness of religion in the famous phrase: "you cant see the forrest for the trees". Angel With The Scabbed Wings, Antichrist Superstar, 1996, and above all The Reflecting God were the best. 1996 portraying the irony in human feeling, is moving to the point of extremes. The Reflecting God symbolising the idiocy of the people that play the inexistant God sticks in your head with it's incredible courus and rythmic chanting "no salvation, no forgiveness". Possibly the bet display of creativity in the entire CD was in Man That You Fear with the characters speaking and making comments. The metal disentegrators chant fills your mind with thoughts as the CD spins into 82 tracks of four period seconds of silence, yet another show of Mansons creativity combining with Reznors powers. The inside leaflet is moving too with the pictures of the worm being transformed into the angel with the scabbed wings and haunting imagery. This is Mansons best at his best.
It's not as bad as Pat Robertson thinks June 1, 2001 Patrick G. Varine (Georgetown, Delaware) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
You have to keep an open mind in listening to a Marilyn Manson record. That is, if you're not one of the dedicated Mansonites who routinely dye their hair black and make trips to the mall all that much scarier. But I digress...As someone who primarily enjoys hip-hop and other black music, Marilyn Manson is a bit of a stretch. He's very white and very angry. But as I forked over my $ (...), I kept thinking, "Keep an open mind." And as I popped it in the car for the ride home, I prepared myself for the worst: an all-out non-musical assault, with more distortion than a fun-house mirror. But no. What I got was a crowd chanting (I think) "We hate love... we love hate..." I was a little worried, but I pressed on. The opener, "Irresponsible Hate Anthem," is a pretty good song. It's got a hard-rocking riff, an up-tempo beat, and lyrics that, while they do aim to shock, are meant to be pondered as well. Manson always lays out grand plans for all his albums, each one a concept and part of a bigger picture. But unless you're one of the above-mentioned hardcore fans, you'll never get the full message. What I focused on is the talent within the music and vocals. It's pretty ample, I must say. "Antichrist Superstar" was produced by Manson and Trent Reznor, and they give the music a muddy-synthetic, paranoid quality that matches Manson's shifting volume, going from a deathly quiet murmur to a metal-grating scream in mere seconds. As I saw it, the whole album was about a metamorphosis of sorts, from worm to butterfly. Songs like "Cryptorchid," with references to worms, boys, and rape, and titles like "Kinderfeld" and "Man That You Fear" (whose tag is "the boy you love's become the man that you fear") all point to a major statement about coming into your own. Manson just does it with spooky synthesizers, distorted metal riffs and crashing drums. There's a certain creepiness to this album that makes it different from the normal electro-metal record. Marilyn Manson, despite his mission to shock America and indeed the world, is a clever guy, and his lyrics prove it. He's not just screaming "Kill your mom, eat your children, have sex with corpses." And if he DOES do it, it's to make you think. This is an interesting record, but like I said, you have to keep an open mind. If for no other reason, pick it up to prove to yourself that he's not the devil.
