2 out of 5 stars A weak effort from a band I expect more out of.   May 23, 2008

Maybe my expectations for music are too high. After listening to bands like Tool, Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, and Porcupine Tree, and after playing a similar style of music myself, I'm always hoping bands will move toward a more progressive and complex sound with their music. Sadly, it's never the case, and 10 Years is no exception.

After reading the band interviews, talking about "reinventing" or "rediscovering" themselves, I was expecting something a little more out there, and a little more creative and interactive. I guess when it comes down to it, 10 Years is a mainstream-style, radio rock band. They are still regrettably confined to 4/4 and 3/4, the same riff patterns that showed up on their first album, and the same typical song formula that every other band out there uses. There is no real musical or emotional progression here...they are just songs, like the first album.

You might be wondering why I bought the first album. I love Jesse's voice, and I was hoping for more of the same on this album, because it's the only thing keeping the band afloat. This is, inconveniently, the only thing they changed, and it's for the worse. His vocals are not nearly as spectacular or as cutting as on the first album. Overall I'm disappointed in 10 Years, because they have so much more potential than what they put into their albums.

All that said however, if you like radio rock, this is some of the best radio rock you will find.

5 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Album   May 14, 2008

I'll admit that it took me a while to really enjoy "Beautiful" soon after they released it as a single. I was a bit worried, but I must admit that this is by far one of the best albums I've bought all year, if not the best. It has a great mix of everything, and for the first time I can honestly say I'm actually enjoying the music both because of the instrumentals AND the lyrics. I almost always used to simply listen to music because I liked the drumming or guitar riffs, but this cd has single handedly showed me how to appreciate the music as a whole. I definitely think everyone should buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, aggresive, and inspiring.   May 14, 2008

Honestly, when i first heard "Beautiful" months and months ago i was a little skeptical. The song for a while just sounded a little boring and bland... but over time i grew to really appreciate the message and overall vibe the song presents. When i bought the album and as soon as i gave it 1 listen through... i was sold. It was well worth the long wait that i was extremely anxious for. The cd takes you on a journey from start to finish, through the diversity this album presents. Jesse Hasek's voice and lyrics are astounding and extremely inspiring. This record has really made me look at my own songwriting skills in a different way. Easily one of my favorite cd's ever. I don't think i will be able to ever pick out favorites from the album i love them all!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. REAL. From the HEART and full of DEPTH. Best CD out there!   May 23, 2008

With Jesse's unique use of words, incredible voice and the bands depth with instrumentals you'll be hooked instantly.
This CD sounds like nothing else out there. With the 'Autumn Effect' they got compared to A Perfect Circle/Tool a lot because of similar voice and singing styles. In Division they step away from that. Its very diverse from song to song, with mid, fast and slow paced tempo and ever changing semi-progressive instrumentals. Still great vocals from Jesse..face it, his voice is similar to Maynard's..theres nothing to do about it and nothing that needs to be done.. its actually a lot better than his(and I'm a big Tool/APC fan myself). You can especially tell when 10 Years does acoustic songs how amazing his voice really is. Lyrically this CD puts anything else out there to shame...if you're looking for immature MTV stuff like 'crazy bitch' 'go home get stoned' or 'when I think about you I cut myself' then don't get this CD..But if you're looking for some real from the heart poetic rock that you can get lost in, then get this CD. you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A truly "complete" album   May 30, 2008

Like many other fans of the band, I have been eagerly awaiting their second true album, and when I first got the CD I thought it was "good."

A lot of bands face a challenge with a second album, but 10 Years chooses to go in a little bit of a different direction, and it will grow on you very quickly. After listening to the whole CD from start to finish, I realized this is a complete album. I wanted 10 Years' new album to be a little softer and include more acoustic guitar than Autumn Effect and they delivered exactly what I wished. "Beautiful" is the closest to Autumn Effect on this CD, but songs like "Drug of Choice," and "Russian Roulette" are very impressive. The CD starts off strong, calms near the middle, picks up again, ends softly, and throughout the whole thing, interludes and transitioning sounds link the album. When it is done you are thoroughly impressed with it.

The instrumentals, Hasek's voice, and the poignant lyrics are probably what draw comparisons to Tool or APC, but 10 Years is a different band. The thing that is the same between them is that they are all great bands that enjoy what they do, put effort into their albums, shun the mass media and the Hollywood overtones of taking the easy way out with an album. Every song is different, every song has a message, and the only way to experience this CD and this band is to grab a CD and listen to it from start to finish.

I do recommend buying from Best Buy though, since that CD comes with two bonus songs. iTunes also comes with a different bonus song and the CD is only $9, but I'm a CD kind of guy. There is something about a CD that let's you understand this band.
