Amazingly exciting, moody and interesting December 3, 1999 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was ready for anything, not having read any Gaiman/McKein work for a very long time now, and picking this up made me feel bad for waiting so long. I was (and still am) amazed at the talent and magistry that Gaiman is able to reflect in eyes of a child, and how the story unfolds wonderfully with the sometimes beautiful, sometimes twisted and dark artwork found within. The pictures alone could tell an an amazing story, and the novella itself is told in the eyes of a child, and you know exactly whose voice the narrative is taking, from Mr Punch, to the Grandfather, to the child. I am a devoted fan, and this has only increased my hopes and chances of picking up more of his work. What are you doing still reading this? Go pick up this book!
wonderfully creepy September 25, 1999 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
A subtle, creepy tale about childhood ghosts that never quite leave you. Dave McKean's artwork is both lovely and horrible, a perfect match for Gaiman's horribly lovely story.
Wonderfully moody and oh so atmospheric April 8, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Neil Gaiman delivers yet another knockout in the realm of the graphic novel with his wonderfully dark and hallucinatory 'Mr. Punch.' A tale of dark and gloomy childhood flashbacks, 'Mr. Punch,' is a great read for those looking for something oozing with chilly atmosphere. The mixed-media (enhanced photos and pencils) artwork by Dave McKean is astounding as well and visually evokes a feeling of helplessness confronting a child when stuck in a grim and depressing environment that amplifies all of his little fears. While this book is nowhere near the epic grandeur of Gaiman's, 'Sandman,' series - as a standalone, 'Mr. Punch,' is a visual and narrative treat not to be missed.
A beautiful piece that pushes the boundaries of the medium November 6, 1996 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Mr. Punch is one of those rare graphic novels that transcends the "fat comic book" and truly explores the possibilities of the medium. The text and illustrations are bound together and support each other, yang and yin, dreams and nightmares, innocence and experience. Dave McKean's illustrations are not only great comic art, they're great fine art, complex, rich, powerful individually but devastating in sequence, and perfectly complement Neil Gaiman's spare, almost naive text
FLAWED BUT FASCINATING March 16, 2001 3 out of 10 found this review helpful
This tale of childhood memories ultimately vanishes into an evanescent swirl of mystery. Those who like hard & fast endings may be put off, though for me the worst feature was trying to decipher McKean's almost incomprehensible handwriting. It's a pity that merely trying to shatter a "comics" convention (in this case, word balloons) should lead to substandard work that obscures good work. Mckean's art I like, but his lettering just defaces it. It also makes Gaiman's prose difficult to read. My advice to Gaiman & McKean: hire a professional letterer, and print the bloody dialogue as a caption if you hate balloons so much!
