Superb new sci-fi drama!! September 21, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was interested in watching this show because Kevin McKidd is an excellent actor, his performance in "Rome" was unforgetable. I was drawn to the premise right away, and there are plenty of unanswered mysteries to be solved in future episides. Like other reviewers, I hope NBC gives this series a chance. Network tv has frustrated me many times by cancelling a great show after only a few episodes (i.e. "Heist") I hope they hang onto this one, it is a definate keeper.
When not in Rome ... September 14, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
[...].
The premise is time-travel but with a twist.
A newspaper reporter in San Francisco, played very well by Scottish import Kevin McKidd (last seen running around "Rome") walks out of his house and into 1993. A few hours later, he's back but two days have gone by in the present. His life starts to become unmanageable as the sudden disappearances start happening closer together and he spends more time in the past.
He is driving to an interview in his new Mustang then suddenly he is tumbling, sans car, in the street in 1997 where he barely avoids getting flattened by an oncoming trolley. Meanwhile, in the present day, his driverless car speeds relentlessly through a red light and causes a major pile-up.
He has no idea why this is happening and no one, not his brother, not his wife, no one believes him.
Adding to the mystery are the people whose lives have intersected with his in the past who he meets on the journey. The second time he visits the past, he encounters his now dead fiance. Then, in the past again, they meet once more, only this time it is clear that she is not really dead. In fact, he discovers that she is also a time traveler. She offers him some cryptic advice, then, quite literally, vanishes leaving him even more confused than when he began.
In the end, he not only figures out at least one reason why this is happening to him, but also a way to convince his wife that the insane claims he is making about his visits to the past are, in fact, true.
My review. There were no car chases but the empty Mustang scene was very cool. There were no explosions but the time-warp scenes will suffice since they look sort of like he is at ground zero during a nuclear attack. He doesn't tote a gun or a knife and in one scene he simply stands still while another guy bloodies his nose and menaces him with a baseball bat, so it would seem that hand-to hand is out of the questions.
Still, I like this show.
Yes, there is a heavy undertone of romance but I'm willing to ignore that if it means wifey and I can watch the show together. And yes, he is a reporter, in San Francisco, which strongly implies that his character will probably vote for Hillary in 2008, but so will a lot of other lemmings so I'm willing to get over it.
The show was surprisingly good. I particularly enjoyed the continuity between his visits to the past and back to the present. I know a little about writing time travel stories and this was handled very well, even with some elegance, I dare say. The relationships he injects himself into and the situations he finds himself in are believable, not farcical.
For instance, he walks into his house about 18 years before he owns it. The current owner invites him to leave in a very undiplomatic fashion. He finds himself on the verge of kissing his now dead fiance but as he places his hand to her cheek catches sight of his wedding band and invents and excuse to leave.
In fact, the show is so good, it will probably only run for half a season so be sure to set up to record it while its still on the air.

I was looking forward to this show... I've always enjoyed the shows about time travel. But I still don't understand what causes him to go back in time.... if it was explained I missed it. There were some clues that I guess were too subtle for me to catch as they happened, and I only 'got it' at the end of the show... Is that what they were going for? Anyway.. I will probably watch one more episode, and then if it isn't any better I'll pass....
great show September 23, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
it's nice to be able to watch a show before it airs to know whether it will be worth watching. and this show proves it. it will definitely be a show worth watching this fall season.
Excellent Hollywood Quality ! September 23, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Felt more like watching a movie rather than watching just an average television show. No commercials or long breaks is a plus ! I'd recommend this series and the download service to purchase it through.
Amazon has really outdone themselves by partnering with TiVo !
