Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
In 1986, gifted animator John Lasseter, technology guru Ed Catmull, and visionary Steve Jobs founded Pixar Animation Studios. Their goal: create a computer animated feature, despite predictions that it could never be done. An unprecedented catalog of blockbuster films later, the studio is honoring its history in this deluxe volume. From its fledgling days under George Lucas to ten demanding years creating Toy Story to the merger with Disney, each milestone is vibrantly detailed. Interviews with Pixar directors, producers, animators, voice talent, and industry insiders, as well as concept art, storyboards, and snapshots illuminate a history that is both definitive and enthralling.

3 out of 5 stars Geat content but quite some 'bad digitized' pictures   February 25, 2008

The content of the book is as high quality and colorfull as the company it describes. Also the author did a good job at documenting the history of the company.

However, in the making of this book someone made a couple of mistakes. There are tens of images which have unacceptable 'pixelation' (i.e. blockiness due to overstretching of digital images). Especially the full page spread on p. 220 jumps out with pixels blown up to almost milimeter size!

This is quite dissappointing to me, especially as it is the artwork of a company which spearheads the way in digital imaging! I can imagine this is a slap in the face of some of the artitst and it would definitely not pass through their quality system if the book was produced by Pixar.

Overall the majority of the images in the book are very well reproduced, so I take the couple of handfull of bad apples for granted.

5 out of 5 stars A loving, thorough portrait   November 25, 2007

You can sense the quality of this massive book before you even open it. The Buzz Lightyear image is a cutout piece of glossy paper, which is set into bright green fabric. The title appears on a translucent paper banner. The back of the book matches the front, except the cutout is of the back side of Buzz. Inside, a black satin ribbon is attached to use as a bookmark.

Fancy treatment indeed, but the text and images live up to it.

The text is thorough and well written, and sprinkled with dozens of interviews with key Pixar people, including Ed Catmull, Steve Jobs and John Lasseter. It's accompanied by hundreds of examples of concept art, photographs, storyboards and fully rendered film images. Everything Pixar is covered, starting with the ten formative years before "Toy Story" (including Lasseter's firing by the Disney Company), through Pixar's acquisition by Disney in 2006.

I especially liked the photographs of voice talent (Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen) taken during recording sessions, and the many behind-the-scenes stories about making the movies. In one, John Lasseter describes how funny Tom Hanks was recording the "Toy Story" scene in which Woody tries to use Buzz's arm as a stand-in for the depressed Space Ranger: " I was laughing so hard, I almost ruined the take," Lasseter remembered. "I had to leave the room and go into the recording booth with the sound engineer."

Here's the chapter list:

CHAPTER 1: Ed
CHAPTER 2: John
CHAPTER 3: Steve
CHAPTER 4: Pixar's Early Days
Spotlight: Sound
Spotlight: The Early Short Films
CHAPTER 5: Toy Story
Spotlight: Music

5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie! Incredible book!   November 9, 2007

FYI I had a chance to glance through the book and it is stunning. I did this at the premiere of the documentary film by Leslie Iwerks "The Pixar Story". This book is the companion to that film. The film was amazing and so I look forward to purchasing the book.

5 out of 5 stars Really a beautiful and well done book   December 22, 2007

This Book is for a person who really likes coffee table books. Its quite big and heavy and is beautify designed with a green fabric cover, a translucent mini sleeve and a bookmark ribbon. Its printed on heavy stock paper that really lets the photos pop. The book is a well written and complete in detail history of Pixar. It profiles the key people and movies involved; full of anecdotes, behind the scene and quotes. It's fully illustrated with photos and full page pictures. Its exciting, fun and quite fascinating with some great artwork.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring book   December 17, 2007
I saw the documentary at the Mill Valley Film Festival and couldn't wait to get the book. It is such an inspiring story.

This book gives you renewed faith in the concept that great ideas CAN see the light of day. Wouldn't it be great if the movie studios would notice that people want ORIGINAL ideas and great storytelling?!
