The Best Updated Guide to Kauai June 26, 2007 18 out of 21 found this review helpful
I just returned from Kauai, and I found that the Horowitz's recommendations were right on. They helped me find the best restaurants and beaches--and how to park to get to them!!! (Tunnels Beach is quite tricky, and Haimura Saimin is a hidden treasure!) I have traveled extensively, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone thinking of going to Kauai. In fact -- I would recommend it to those just dreaming of going!
True Aloha Spirit June 7, 2007 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
If you are looking for the best travel guidebook for the real Kauai, this is it. All you need to know about the island's best restaurants, beaches, hiking areas, surfing, hotels, spas, shopping is included as well as enriching historical/cultural information, too. Plus the photographs are just stunning! Lenore and Mirah's enthusiasm for Kauai really shines through on every page. I have given this special guidebook to many friends who are vacationing in Kauai, and all have loved it. It has the true Aloha Spirit! (The CD is a special treat, too)
The definitive guide to Kauai, an absolute essential. June 3, 2007 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This wonderful guide by Lenore Horowitz made my family's first trip to Kauai feel like a homecoming to a beautiful island full of long lost friends. With insider tips on the best beaches, restaurants and outdoor activities, Mrs. Horowitz shares decades worth of wisdom and allows the reader to discover all that makes this beautiful island so special without wasting time on tourist traps or the less worthy sites. My family had only a week to explore Kauai, but were able to get a real feel for the island thanks to this remarkable book. Our favorites include the delicious banana pancakes at Kountry Kitchen, fresh yellow fin ahi wraps at Mermaid's Cafe, the live music and fresh fish for dinner at Cafe Coco and the unbeatable food, prices and atmosphere at Bull Shed. Scuba diving was fantastic at Tunnels Beach, and scuba instructor Gregg Winston is as special as this book describes. After a morning of diving, Gregg suggested a great place to eat, and loaned us his infant carrier backpack so that we could go hiking with our two young children. We stayed at the Kauai Mariott Beach Club, which has a beautiful pool, amazing beach, and great access to Duke's Canoe Club for lunch and dinner. I want to thank Lenore Horowitz and her amazing guide book for making our vacation so special.
Great Guide August 20, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have traveled all over the world and have used all the "regular" guidebooks, but I have never found anything quite like the Kauai Underground Guide. You can just tell that the Horowitz's love the island and know it inside and out -- so much better than a generic book that covers every island in the same way. This guidebook describes each beach, restaurant, and activity in its own special way and lead us to hidden spots like Haimura Saimin -- perhaps the most unique Kauai experience and the tastiest noodles we ever had --and Mahalapu? It is a must read before you go -- and, the best part is that by buying it you give something back to the wonderful island that you are visiting. The proceeds of the Underground Guide are divided among 5 local children's charities. That alone seems enough reason to buy this book!!
Invaluable guide June 3, 2007 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book makes Kauai your own place. It tells you where to go, the most exciting things to do, the best places to eat, how to spend your money wisely. We never went wrong following the advice of this author, who knows the island so well that each day became a new adventure. It made our family's trip really special.
